Hold On

Today I reach out to offer you My hand.  Will you take it?  Do you have a free hand to grasp mine?  What good are the things that you hold so tightly if they sink with you in the mire of this world?  Free your hand and reach out to Me.  For the call to action has come and I know the way. Hold firmly to the hand that pulls you forward.  Don’t let go.  For the future that I have for you can not be reached without holding on to Me.

Luke 5:1-11

One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the people crowding around him and listening to the word of God,  he saw at the water's edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets.  He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch."

Simon answered, "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything.  But because you say so, I will let down the nets."

When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.  So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said, "Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!"  For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon's partners.

Then Jesus said to Simon, "Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men."  So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

Commentary

After receiving this prophetic word, I began to search the scriptures for more meaning and a biblical reference.  The passage listed from Luke 5:1-11 above caught my attention.  So let’s look at this story before we comment on the prophetic word.

This event occurred early in the ministry of Jesus when e was ready to gather His disciples.  He was teaching at the Sea of Galilee where Peter, Andrew, James and John fished.  They had apparently been fishing all night but were not able to catch anything.  Maybe this was divine intervention that their business had failed that day and they found themselves at the shore listening to Jesus.  Jesus then decided to use their boats or livelihood as an instrument to share the Gospel of the Kingdom.  Apparently He planned on using James, John, Peter and Andrew the same way.

After He had preached, He then took Peter out to the deep water and told him to once again to cast his nets.  Though Jesus was a carpenter, not a fisherman, Peter did it anyway.  The catch was so large he had to call his partners, (James and John) to come and help get all of the catch.  Jesus demonstrated that He had the power to make them very successful fisherman, but more importantly showed that He had the power to make them successful Apostles of the Gospel of the Kingdom.

When they returned to shore, they all had a choice to continue as fishermen or to follow Christ as his apostles.  They chose to leave their boats and all of their fishing gear for the One who called them into the deep waters of the ministry.

So having reviewed this passage from Luke, it is clear to Me that God is saying it is time to drop my own efforts to be successful and follow Him who holds the power to succeed or fail in this economy, as well as the power to succeed in His eternal Kingdom.
