Spiritual Cliff

While the world ponders the fiscal cliff ahead, know that I am concerned about the spiritual cliff ahead. The fiscal cliff was man’s attempt to avoid financial disaster, because they know the truth, but would not stand for it to repent. Such as it is in the church and the world. The governments and people of this world know that they are on a road that leads to destruction, yet they refuse to come to Me and repent.

Even now it is within My grace to repent and return, but where is My voice crying in the wilderness? Who will cry and pray and repent of their ways? Who will lead My people to the mountain? Who will come up to meet Me face to face?

The people in the wilderness feared to come to Me. So they sent Moses. Yet they died in the wilderness anyway. Would it not have been better to face Me on the mountain than to die in the wilderness? For I offer grace, but the consequences do not.

John 5:37-40

And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent.

You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

Commentary

This prophetic word relates the fiscal cliff set for this country on January first, to the spiritual cliff coming for this nation and the world. The fiscal cliff was set by congress to put hard decisions that would force the congress to make difficult budget decisions while putting off the decisions until after the election. This would be like saying that if you cannot keep your diet by January first, you will be automatically picked up by the police and thrown into a prison where they would control your eating. Surely this threat of such a drastic measure would force you to become a responsible eater, or not. I guess it is something like the threat of drug rehabilitation. How often does that threat work?

So God says that this country has built a spiritual cliff by failing to control its additions. Of course the only real answer is to repent and turn to God. But though this country knows that its turning from God is bringing a loss of moral character and a degrading of our economy, our integrity, and our wisdom, they continue to move further from Him. And God is looking for someone who will provide true leadership to lead people back to Him.

The last part of the word uses the illustration of the Israelites in the wilderness at Mount Sinai where the people were afraid to face God directly, and submit directly to Him. Instead they decided to not face the truth of their sin. But not facing God with it only led to dying in the wilderness. Perhaps if they would have come seeking mercy from God they would have still been given the promised land.

Today we are doing the same thing. We wander in the wilderness knowing that something is wrong. We buy self help books by the millions and sign up for gym memberships hoping to change our ways. Yet the true spiritual cliff is looming closer and we will not admit that we can’t handle it. We will still not turn our lives over to Christ and be changed. The true consequences of our failure are coming soon, and when they come, they will have no mercy.

The verse John 5:37-40 shows that we think by our own efforts to understand our problem we came find the solution, and yet the true problem is that we have not submitted our life to Christ. I believe that this word is a warning that the consequences of our turning from God are very close. Maybe God is using this fiscal cliff as a warning that we cannot even rule ourselves, let alone this country, without Christ Jesus.
